How do you cut them? do you have to heat the top to take off the sharpe edges?

nope, no heating, if you have a dremel and some grinding blades, it'll be easy. but wear a breathing mask, you dont want that getting in your lungs!

You can do it without a dremel, too. Kind of a neat example of thermal properties in materials.
