Default Rust ...

I went a few months without brewing and now the base of my heater element has rusted. It wasn't that bad to clean up, but it also wasn't pretty. Any recommendation on how to avoid this in the future?

I vaguely recall someone who put oil on theirs, but at the time I wasn't satisfied with the type of oil they were using. All input welcome.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the iron cast burner?

I have the same issue with my turkey frying burner that is stored outside in the elements.

You can clean and dry it as soon as you're finished to try and prevent rust.

I covered mine in a layer of food safe clear silicone (RTV 108)...seems to be working so far.

I'm talking about the base of the element that isn't part of the element, but the element comes out of and is facing the water. I have no idea what it is called, but it rusts even if I dry it off each time.

orangehero: Good idea, that just might end up being what I have to do.
