Hi HBT folks!! Long time lurker, thread starting virgin here....

I had a mad scientist moment recently... Any thoughts / opinions on using oak barrels for the HLT and boil kettle?

** assumptions - oak barrel new but water tight..

I've seen keggles, pots, coolers and assorted vessels... Temp shouldn't be high enough to burn the wood.... (IMHO)

I think using oak for the HLT could be interesting, nothing to clean out there.

Thanks all for the comments and allowing me to bounce the idea off you all.... Seems to be a bit too mad scientist'ish.... :)

I bet this is traditional for stein beer. They probably used barrels and tossed in some hot rocks for the boil. If you can figure out how to do it, I say go for it.

Understood.. Would love to.. Just need to research how to keep tiny buggers from growing inside between batches....

I'd find a stainless vessel that generally fit inside the barrel. That way you get the conversation piece without the hassle of working with wet wood.

Def a possibility.. given they may be on display.. Still deciding on the layout of the basement... (brewery, bar, play area oh and a corner for the kids too.. :D
