I've been trying to figure out how the contactor between the SSR and the element is a safety issue. I can see that if the SSR fails closed and the element is out of water then you burn up the element, but I don't see where the contactor is a personal safety issue.

What happens when you drain the water out of the tank? To turn off the element you either unplug it, adjust the water pickup so the water level doesn't go below the element, turn off the PID, or turn off the element using a switch (a contactor).

You decide how safe you want to be. For < $20 this is a no-brainer solution.

It's a safety issue because when I want my element off, it better be off - not on, or kinda on, or on if the PID thinks it should be on... but OFF. So when I go to clean the element it's not hot or powered up.
