I have been working this build for two months. Today I was finally ready to take it for a test drive. Here are some pictures of the build.

This is the wiring diagram I used. The only change not on the diagram is a 110v fan that turns on when the PID does.

Something like this is my dream system. Any chance I could talk you in to some details on the hardware... particularly the controller and heating elements.

Great job.

What cart is that?

It is from Harbor Freight, I ran out of money towards the end . I turned two of the shelves upside down.

I plan on posting the parts list and the wiring diagram sometime over the next few days.

Looks awesome man! I've got a slew of parts coming from Amazon and Ebay to get mine underway. I love these builds!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did everything besides the cart run you? I've been eyeing the e-BIAB system from High Gravity Brewing for awhile now and wonder how much it would be for me to build it myself. You've basically built that same system. Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing.

I would say around 800. Including the $100 GFI breaker in my panel.

subscribed.

This is how i want to start my HERMS build - BIAB, then step to RIMS, then move to HERMS; staged across a couple years so my wife doesn't freak out when I put 1 to 2 thousand bucks worth of equipment into the basement for the sole purpose of making beer.

Hey, if you have time, could you throw up a parts list/breakdown? Thanks!

EDIT: Also, how do you sparge a biab that large? I am about to pull the trigger on a 20 gallon vessel and don't understand how you could sparge that large of a bag over a kettle.

I plan to put up the parts list this weekend.

I haven't sparged since I moved to BIAB from a 3 vessel system. The pot is 16 gallons and I do 5 or 10 gallon batches without a problem. I guess if I was doing a really big 10 gallon beer I would have to sparge, but I really don't drink that enough of those to warrant a 10 gallon batch. Circling back around to your original question :cross:, I would just hoist it up on my pulley system and sparge that way if I needed to.

Did you also end up getting the Harbor Freight Knockout Punches? I'm still trying to decide if I could just splurge and get the greenline or not.

I did use the harbor freight punches. If I had the money I would of uses the greenline ones that are the actual size stated on the label. The harbor freight punches are sized for conduits which makes them larger than the size listed on the punch.

Yeah, that's what I've read. I've considered just looking around town to see what a machine shop would charge to punch a couple holes.

With the harbor freight step bits and the punches you can get the job done. If you look at the pictures, check out the smaller hole I made in the pot for the probe. I made that with just the step bit. You just need to keep it cool with oil.

I added the parts list and wiring diagram to the original post, for those who were interested.

Do you find you have to re-circ very slow? If I dont almost shut down the output of the pump while mashing it starves.

Not at all actually. I use to have that problem with my old pickup on my keggle. I am using a 5/8 barb now and, unlike my old setup, the bag sits on the false bottom instead of the on pickup. I am guessing that is the difference. I could go full blast if wanted too, but that would just be silly :cross:

Are you able to tell me the diameter of that steamer tray and the height the legs get it off the bottom? Also does your cart have locking brakes on the casters? And last what kind of bag are you using, just trying to find out why my recirc is so slow if your able to recirc at full bore.

Could you share a higher res image of your wiring diagram? I am looking at doing something almost exactly like this over the next few nights to brew with this weekend.

Can you step mash or heat the wort up (if your mash temp drops too much)? Or would the element scorch the wort, even with the pump on.

If I recall those low density elements aren't as likely to scorch the wort.

Awesome build. I was thinking of doing a HERMS setup, but this just seems so much easier. I know BIAB is a little less efficient, but it seems like a huge time saver which is important to me since I've got other demands on my time... I'll gladly buy a little extra grain.

A couple of questions, can I do 10 gallon batches with the 16 gallon pot you used, and also, how do you mount the nylon bag?

@Kevreh - Yes you can step mash with or without the pump recirculating, depends on where the temp probe is mounted.

@badmajon - Where did you hear BIAB is less efficient(less efficient than what?). I consistently get 80 - 84% and I'm sure if I were to double crush I could get higher. I believe most BIAB people here will tell you the same. A typical brew session for me is 3.25 - 3.5 hours for a 5 gallon batch, including clean up.

This may be a stupid question, but how do you secure components to the box without screwing through the case? Those contactor's are bulky.

I only have a few brews under my belt, but I have the same kettle and I am trying to put together an E-BIAB system.

I'm wondering what prevents the bag from scorching on the element.

Is it the "Steam Tray" that ensures the bag doesn't touch the element and burn?

This product here? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OMQGI0/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Thanks.
