Default Sorghum question

I have a couple friends that want me to make a GF beer and I don't know much about it. One friend told me they sell sorghum in the local grocery stores. My question: Is that the same sorghum as what I'd get from a brew shop or are there different kinds of sorghum available? Would it work for brewing beer?

Look in this thread for some ideas on GF ingredients

That said- at the local grocery they probably have sorghum molasses. I've never used it but I think it is different from the sorghum syrup I would order from Midwest Supplies online.

I tried using the sorghum molasses and that is not what you're looking for. Get the sorghum syrup from hbs.

Sorghum molasses is usually sorghum syrup that's been further boiled down, blended with some traditional sugar cane molasses.

Also, it's worthy to note the difference between working with raw sorghum grain (which you'd malt yourself, probably) and sorghum syrup. The syrup is made from a sweet variety of sorghum, and isn't made from the grain at all. Instead, the stalks are pressed to extract a sweet juice that is boiled down to produce the syrup.
