Default yeast nutrient smells like ammonia?

i am using LD Carlson yeast nutrient and energizer in my mead and when i mix it in boiled water it has a strong ammonia smell. i know there is DAP in it and contains ammonia but i am wondering if this is normal? or safe?

Yep, perfectly normal. You're not supposed to boil it, btw which is probably why you're getting that smell.

Yes it smells normal...It's food grade Urea after all.

I mix it in before pitching my yeast. Some people toss it in at flameout.

well i boil a very small amount of water to disolve the nutrient and the energizer says to apply heat. there shouldnt be a problem with the boiling water right?
