Default when to refresh stored yeast?

I have some yeast that I have washed or saved from started and was wondering at what point I should consider making a starter to "restore" the yeast. A couple of the strains I don't have in the plans for a brew day all that soon so I figured it might be good to make a starter and refresh them. Thoughts?

There are many posters on this forum who have successfully used yeast harvested up to a year prior. I would "refresh" your yeast every 6 months to be on the safe side.

Use a yeast starter calculator that will give an estimate of % viability based on production date. I make a one liter 1.020 OG starter when viability is near 25%. The 25 % is just an arbitrary number I picked. Not based on any science.
