Can I use Wheat DME to make a starter for a non-wheat beer? I have some extra laying around and would prefer to use that.
Yes, you decant most of the spent wort off the starter before adding it to the beer. The cup or two max leftover that you add will have negligible effect on the flavor of the beer.
I use wheat DME for all my starters and pitch the entire thing. Works great!
I do it without decanting as well.
