Starter lacking krausen?

I put on my fist starter last night, I managed to borrow a 3 L E-flask and a hot/stir plate from the lab. This was a great set up because it let me boil the starter wort (200 g Light DME in 2L) on the stir plate while stirring to prevent any boilover. I then cooled it in the sink and aerated with an aquarium pump for 20 minutes before pitching a wyeast 1056 smack pack that had been smacked 4 hours earlier.
Its now ~19 hours later and there are no signs that the starter produced any krausen as you would see in a batch of beer. There are lots of bubbles traveling up the sides of the flask, and turning the stirrer off for 10 minutes produces a .5" layer of yeast on the bottom.
Is this typical of a yeast starter with constant stirring?

Starters don't commonly get much, if any, krausen. If you're using a stir plate, you certainly won't get any.
