Default specific gravity

Is it normal for a fermenting beer to drop from 1.065, before pitching the yeast to 1.022 by the second or third day of fermentation.

Also I went ahead and added some maple syrup to the fermenter. Would this sugar addition affect the beer at this stage in fermentation
