Yes, you use an airlock as long as it is in a fermenter--primary, secondary or tertiary.

Who knew there was an ancient recipe for beer in the Bible?

My paraphrase: "Since you don't know what disasters might befall you , when you make beer share it with friends. Someday you might need them to share with you."

Are you using a secondary for a specific reason?
Yes, you would want an airlock.

Always use an airlock -- it keeps the baddies (or goodies, if you want wild yeasts) out.

I only use a secondary for adding fruit or if there are a large amount of hops and trub remaining and I want to use a secondary to dry hop.
It increases the risk of infection and oxidation and I don't believe its necessary otherwise.

You could just use a piece of sanitized foil, but go w/ an airlock if you can.
