Default Feeding a yeast starter

This will be the first time I'm going to make a yeast starter... I normally use liquid yeast smack packs, but I got some ale yeast from the lhbs that was seriously only labelled "ale yeast", came in a tub that I had to weigh out, and I don't know if I have quite enough... so a starter will be a must... (seriously Canada is lacking in LHBS quality, but paying for shipping is almost worse!)

I have on hand some leftover Coopers Brewing Sugar from a starter kit and wonder if this will work ok to feed the yeast or do I need to get some DME? The ingredients are dextrose and maltodextrin, but I'm not sure of the ratio... Has anyone used this before with success or does it just ferment out the yeast instead of feed it?

Using that would make me so nervous. No idea where it has been, what has been in it, or how it has been treated.
