Default Cooling active fermentation

I brewed a batch of Abita Turbodog clone on Friday, and after active fermentation started I moved it to the basement.
http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/abit...og-clone-4768/
Recipe says ferment at 55-58 degrees, but I substituted WLP029 German Ale/Kolsch yeast (what abita actually uses).
1. Can I throw(gently place) my fermenter into an ice bath to bring it down?
2. Should I bother? I read that 029 doesn’t do well under 62F - Its about 64 now.
3. It also says to lager at 45F for a week before bottling.

This is only my third batch so I really need help!

Yes, use frozen milk jugs to cool the water down

Yeast is exothermic and will produce heat and may drive up the temp so it is best to be proactive and cool it down

If you have a fridge to keep a constant temp then fine, if not it wont be a big deal
