Hello. Quick question; when I get back from vacation I'm brewing a Ferocious IPA kit from Midwest, which came with one package of liquid yeast. From what I've read that may not be enough, especially since I need to get some basics for making a yeast starter. Tried to find what the OG was supposed to be but just says 'high'. SO. Should I pitch two of the smack packs for a better pitch rate?

If you can't make a starter then yes but depending on the date in the pack you will still probably be under pitching.

Your OG should be about 1.066. What's the date on the yeast?

I wish I could say, it's about 2000 miles away right now. I know that's a big factor. I got it in the mail about a week and a half ago, it's in the fridge.

You want about 300 billion cells for that OG. You would need three one day old packets to pitch correctly.

Assuming 5.5gal (.5 for fermentor loss) that's an approx OG of 1.064, so you'll need between 245M and 325M cells. There's ~100M in a fresh pack so even 2 will be under pitching if you go by the numbers.

I normally use mrmalty but it doesn't work on the workstation i'm on right now : )

Wow. Well may not all be a day old but even so it will be way closer to the correct rate than what I've been doing. Appreciate the help. Ill get three for this batch and get a starter setup when I get paid.
