Price: $0.01 Pros: Free cooler, cheap parts, easy and fast labor. Cons: Would prefer larger for 5-6 gal. batches. Recommended? Yes
Comments: Actually a DIY 6-gallon cooler MLT with a brass ball valve with a barbed tip on outflow and a sealed shank with 24" mesh screen tube and a stainless steel false bottom with drilled holes.

Price: $35.00 Pros: Lightweight, pretty good temp retention Cons: Plastic can warp over time, lid is heat loss area unless insulated by owner Recommended? Yes
Comments: I have a 5 gal, 7 gal, and 10 gal Rubbermaid cooler that I use as mash tuns depending on the batch size and type of beer I am brewing. I usually lose anywhere from 1° to 3° over the span of an hour. This may or may not be an issue for everyone. They are easy to convert into a MLT from standard parts at your local home improvement store.

Price: $45.00 Pros: Maintains temperature well throughout grain soak. Give's extra room over 5 gallon coolers so you can fit enough grain for some higher gravity beers in a 5 gallon batch Cons: None that I have found. Recommended? Yes
Comments: Only needs minimal work to attach pass through valve. If you get a smaller ball-valve you can just use the gasket that is currently in the cooler for the water dispenser.

Comments: This eguiptment was selected for it's wide stance giving the grain bed a wide area(15.5"). It is capable of holding up to 25#s of grain for the 10 gallon brews with 3 in. head space.
