Or you could get 8 people to do the same 5 gal batch then blend in the barrel?

Exactly. My homebrew club did something similar to that with barleywines; aging them in a whiskey barrel. Soon we're going to brew on a commercial system at one of the member's work and age that in a whiskey barrel too... This could be a lot of fun for a homebrew club.
