Radical Brewing: The New Classic of Beer Literature
History, humor and homebrewing converge when the creative and prolific mind of Randy Mosher explores the expressive side of beer in Radical Brewing.

Mosher sees homebrewing—and by extension craft brewing—as an antidote to corporate, mass-market beers. Over two decades of brewing and beer research, he has probed the depths of beer history in both his reading and his brewing. Radical Brewing displays the many unique ales and lagers that have resulted from his celebration of beer while serving as a vehicle for discussing a creative, "outside the lines" approach to modern brewing. Through it all, the reader is treated to Mosher’s irresistible love of beer and brewing as well as some very humorous asides on beer history.

The infectious spirit of homebrewing is hard to resist when one reviews Mosher’s recipe for "Electric Aunt Jemima Maple Buckwheat Ale," checks out the section on "(Not so Dumb) Blonde Ales" or chuckles through his fanciful description of the birth of beer featuring the ancient Harl’eh-riding Ur’s Angels. Best of all, the two-color visually rich content comes in self-contained segments that instantly engage readers no matter what page they turn to.

Typically, modern brewing books focus on the science of how to brew—and Mosher has mastered all of that. But in Radical Brewing, he focuses on the creative, expressive opportunities available to those with a brew kettle. Each chapter offers techniques and recipes as well as ideas for independent exploration of new brewing frontiers. The result is a text that both informs and inspires experienced brewers while providing an engaging and intelligent introduction to the hobby for newcomers.

Famed beer writer Michael Jackson once called Mosher "some kind of homebrewing genius" and in the forward to Radical Brewing, he further lionizes this genius, saying "His activities are probably a threat to our morals. Passion, imagination and tenacity are a challenge to the established order." These two masters of beer have collaborated in the past, as Jackson notes when he tells how Mosher accurately recreated the flavor of a now-lost beer style that even Jackson had only once tasted himself. And though Jackson’s accolades for Mosher are great, one can only imagine that they will pale as practicing brewers of all stripes begin to digest Mosher’s treasure-trove of beer ideas and render their own reviews of this delightful book.

Cons: Not for beginners

Comments: I would give it six stars if I could. I've probably read this book at least four times from start to finish, and I'm constantly referencing it for questions and guidelines. Truly a fascinating look at the world of brewing beer.

Pros: Unleashes the creativity of the brewer

Comments: I found Mosher's book a refreshing change from the other books and articles on homebrewing that I have read. His approach to homebrewing is more akin to the way I approach cooking. A long time ago I read a quote by a chef who said, "If I don't have an ingredient listed in a recipe, I don't need it."

Of course this advice only goes so far, but it changed the way I cooked. Instead of slavishly following recipes, I realized I could make any recipe my own by tweeking the recipe by varying ingredients or substituting others.

This sums up Mosher's approach to brewing. You don't need to slavishly follow brewing formulations. Think outside the box. Make recipes your own by using unconventional ingredients. This isn't the call for throwing anything you can think of into a brew and presto, you have a delicious concoction. It is more a call to use your imagination.

Obviously Mosher isn't the first to think this way, else the craftbrew industry would not be where it is today. Still, a lot of us avid homebrewers needed the wakeup call to use our imaginations when brewing.

Mosher's book provides that call like Bachman Turner Overdrive's Not Fragile on the radio at 5AM in the morning. This book in a must have for homebrewers.

Pros: Great recipes for unique beers
Cons: Sometimes sparse on details
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This book is a must-have if you want to spice up your brewing. Probably the best thing about it is that the abnormal recipes listed are all GOOD. No guesswork or risking an entire batch on a crazy beer.

If you're like me, you want to brew stuff you could never buy in a store. This is the book that will help you do that. Also, if you're interested in the history of beer, it's chock-full of it. Entertaining to read, and well-written. Don't compare it to How to Brew because it's not a primer on brewing at all.

Buy this book, and in no time you can amaze friends and family with beers such as chai browns, belgian IPAs, and tangerine porters.

Pros: Fun, Informative, Eclectic
Cons: None

Comments: Having a couple years of AG experience, I found Radical Brews to be a nice change of pace. It has a good number of interesting recipes, great historical quotes, lots of pictures of old equipment and ads, and a generally fun layout. While he does cover the basics (Barley, Hops, Water, Yeast), Mosher injects interesting historical perspectives and stories, making it interesting for even accomplished brewers.

I was beginning to get tired of brewing books until I received this book for Christmas. I also received Mosher's Tasting Beer, which also seems to be a good read.

Pros: Interesting reading material. Informative, with information that may kickstart your own creativity.
Cons: Not as in-depth as the other instructional brewing books.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: As has been stated, Radical Brewing is light on in-depth brewing instructions, but I don't believe it was intended to be used a single source of reference. Randy Mosher's writing style is entertaining, and informative, and that makes this book a pleasure to read, and more than once!

I found the book to be enlightening, and thought provoking, and although I woudl not rely on it to be a go-to book for brewing, it's a distinct pleasure to read and I found it sparking my interest in different method and ingredients to be used in beer.

I would definitely recommend this to any homebrewer who wants to step away from the technical discussion a bit and just read about different beers and possibilities.

Pros: -Interesting Read
Cons: - Not as informative as other books
Recommended? Yes

Comments: As I'll preface all of my book reviews: I've read just about every major homebrewing book and have enjoyed them all.

This was a good read, but definitely not as informative as "How to Brew" and "Designing Great Beers" -- still, it definitely has more interesting tidbits about the hobby and some good humor.

I'd suggest this to homebrewers who have read the above mentioned books or just want something interesting to read that relates to the hobby. This is definitely not one of my "resource manuals" around the brew house -- more like the bathroom sitting on the tank of my toilet for some bathroom reading.
