It all started when I listened to the November 30th and December 7th 2006 episodes of Basic Brewing Radio (http://www.basicbrewing.com/radio/)

James interviews Maureen Ogle, author of Ambitious Brew. There I learn than there is much more to the history of American beer that I thought there is. I even ended up taking the I-pod into work to finish listening.

So I got the book for Christmas and just finished reading it. I have been rather busy with other things, so it took me a while to get through the book. I have to say it is a great book for what it is: a book about the beer history in America. It surely seems centered around AB, but only because this brewery had the most signigicant impact on American beer history.

Maureen has gotten a lot of critique for the book since she debunkts some common myths. She even has a blog where she explains her position: http://maureenogle.com/blog/
It should also be noted that she didn't know much about beer before she wrote the book. This left her unexposed to the existing myths about the significance of colonial breweing and the use of adjuncts by big brewing and she had to get all the facts through research.

If you want to know how American beer evolved (starting with the German immigrants in the mid 1800s all to way to the present day micro brewing heaven that we are in) then this is your book. If you want to know about the history of micro brewing and their various breweries in more detail, this is not your book

Pros: Excellent history of American Brewing
Cons: Neglects early American brewing, before the mid 1800s
Recommended? Yes

Comments: The book ignores brewing before the mid 1800's when what were to become the large commercial brewers of the 20th century got their start. It does give you an excellent picture of their early years and the state of brewing as an industry at the time, and is bound to give you a better appreciation for Anheuser-Busch. It tracks the rise, and the ultimate failure of some of the larger brewers, and brewing families, heading into the later half of the 20th century and the advent of craft brewing as an industry. It delves into why some commercial and craft brewers succeed, while many others failed by examining the market conditions within which they operated and the view of the population at large towards beer.

To the review that it does not dive deeply into the current state of craft brewing, it should be remembered that the craft brewing movement is very new, having really only gained traction over the last 15 years or so. As such, it is difficult to write a "history" of something that is still ongoing. With this in mind, she does provide an account of how it got it start and who the major players were.

All in all, it was a very good read and well worth the time for anybody interested in history. It is extremely well researched, an unbiased in regard to the craft/commercial brewing dichotomy.

Maureen Ogle Ambitious Brew - The Story of American Beer
Pros: Good history on the early days of brewing in the USA.
Cons: Moves fairly quick through the final craft brew years.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading about the history of brewing in the USA. It focuses more on the early years and the rise of the major brewers, the brewing dynasties, etc (AB, Miller, Coors, Schlitz, Pabst). It addresses the the rise of craft beers, but does not cover this period in as much detail.

Comments: Overall is a good book, but gets boring around the turn of the century. Maybe I will give it another try.
