Pros: The detailed explanation of everything in the book.
Cons: Some parts of the mash equations are confusing. Like the equation for sparging.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: The information in this book is very detailed for the begining brewer. There are many pictures that help detail the brewing process; from extract brewing to all grain. It is also breaks down the chemistry of many variable that go into brewing such as water reports, mash ph, water temperatures and how different temps help mash react differently, recipe design equations, and much more. I could not put this book down when I got it, it was so full of everything I needed to answer all of my questions. A must for any home brewers aresenal of books. Buy it. Do it.

Pros: Information is well organized and written in an easy to understand format, great for beginners and seasoned pros.
Cons: I have nothing bad to say about this book.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This book in my opinion is a must have for anyone who wants to brew, weather they are beginners or seasoned beer brewing professionals. This book has it all. It is written in an easy to understand format and the content is well organized into specific chapters. The beginning of the book starts out with the fundamentals of brewing and towards the end you start getting into the science and technical stuff. I haven't gotten to that stage yet but I know where I'm going to look once I do. Great Book! I highly recommend.

Pros: This is the ultimate source book for brewing from start to finish. All styles of brewing are covered and very few stones are left unturned.
Cons: The information on hops, grains, and other ingredients is dated. This is by no means the fault of the author. New products are created all the time and a novel cannot be expected to keep up with that.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: John Palmer's novel is excellent both for learning and for reference. It covers every aspect of brewing, including materials, ingredients, and scientific facts. Every brewer should have a copy of this on hand not only for learning how to brew properly, but for a reference for those trinkets of knowledge that you only need from time to time.

This book is written in an easy to read manner. A number of recipes are also included. Still making considerations on which books you need to start brewing? Make sure this is at the top of your list.

Pros: Great first book
Cons: slightly outdated since it still recommends secondary for all beers
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I like the way it is set up. The first chapter is a good intro without going into too much detail. Whenever I have a friend help me I have them read the first chapter so they have a slight idea of what we are doing and why, and I just explain a little more along the way.

Pros: Cover's pretty much everything pretty broadly and somewhat in-depth.
Cons: You will want to buy more books.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I love it! It's taught me so much I can't even explain. It's set up very and extremely simple and goes into depth on almost everything from malt to hops to yeast. In the later chapters it begins to cover all grain stuff such as water chemistry, what's going on during the mash, how to mash, and let's mash! It also has a huge section over the different styles of beer and brief histories of those. It covers troubleshooting and reminding you to RDWHAHB. Furthermore in the appendices it begins to cover how to build your own stuff such as lauter tuns and mash kettles. Lots o fun!!!! The author is a metallurgist so he also covers things about all the metals you might come into contact with and how to keep things clean. I'm still reading it and will always use it as my encyclopedia and guide to brewing!

Pros: like it says on the cover: "Everything you need to know to brew beer right the first time"
Cons: none
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Very detailed description of brewing and every element involved in brewing....he makes it as simple or as complex as you can handle. I'm new to brewing and reading this book and really understanding the cause and effect gives me enough confidence to take the challenge of all-grain brewing head on. I'm sure this will be a constant resource for me over the next several months! And the best part was, I got the book for free when I joined the AHA!!!

Pros: - The most comprehensive book on the market - A must buy for all Brewers -- new and experienced
Cons: - None
Recommended? Yes

Comments: As I'll preface all of my book reviews: I've read just about every major homebrewing book and have enjoyed them all.

This is the best all around book available to Homebrewers. You can use the online version for free-- but if you can spare some change, I'd suggest buying the book and supporting the man. Plus the book is a lot more thorough and complete.

Great, great book. Even great brewers will find something in here they didn't know.

I think Palmer strikes the right balance between basic and technical information.

Pros: Well written, well organized
Cons: none

Comments: This has to be my favorite book on homebrewing. The first chapter is a crash course in how to make an extract batch start to finish. The rest of the book explains it all in depth. The first edition of the book is available online. If you like that, then you should buy the latest edition.

Pros: authoritative, easy to understand, dense with info
Cons: not waterproof!
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I found this to be an excellent book. I've just started brewing, and this book simply and clearly laid out both the bare-bones basics and the more advanced knowledge. I have come back to it again and again already. The author clearly describes the basic techniques, then fills you in on the specifics without overloading the reader. Whether you want basic info or technical specifics, it's here. Other brewers I've talked to who've read this book speak very highly of it. My only complaint is that it doesn't come fully laminated, as it's already taken a couple spills!

Pros: Great for beginners and intermediate brewers
Cons: None
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I have read & studied several books on brewing and if I had only one book to own on brewing ever, this would be it. This book will take a beginner through the steps to great beer and by gradiently using the more advanced knowledge and techniques covered in the book, he or she will be able to become well on their way to advanced brewing. I am constantly referring back to it to glean more information on a particular aspect of brewing or to review basics again. No book is ever the ultimate but this one comes closer than any of the others I have read.
