Price: $59.99 Pros: Everything you need to start brewing minus the extract kit itself. Cons: A bit incomplete when you find needing more tools is essential to brewing. Recommended? Yes
Comments: The basic kit that I bought at kirks brew in lincoln ne made from brewers best products is a pretty legit kit for the price. However when you begin brewing you see why its priced a little less than other competitors, you find it doesnt have certain tools you need for brewing such as the kettle, testing jar (every book you read tells you not to put the hydrometer in the raw wart). I managed to get by my first batch w/o this however and it came out fine. Although this is the only thing I thought was a slight set back the kit was great and had fun using it.

Price: $100.00 Pros: Gets you started Cons: No brew kettle or thermometer. Recommended? Yes
Comments: This kit is a decent starting kit. There are a few things you end up needing to get before you can really brew, but overall it's pretty good. I got the kit as a gift, so it wasn't as big of a deal to get the rest of the stuff and get brewing.

Price: $100.00 Pros: A truly complete beginner's kit Cons: Bottling bucket leaks slightly
Hydrometer jar is flimsy Recommended? Yes
Comments: I highly recommend upgrading from the standard kit to this one -- it has everything you need to get started (except ingredients and a stock pot, of course).
Actually bought it with a Groupon to expand our production and ended up wishing I'd started with this kit first. I'd still recommend buying some Star San and the Joy of Homebrewing, but you should still be in decent shape if you skipped those two items.
My only real complaint is the bottling bucket's spigot is finicky and will leak if not positioned in exactly the right spot. Also, do yourself a favor and buy a better hydrometer jar...the one with the kit leaks like a sieve.
