P.B.W. is a buffered alkaline detergent that has been proven to be more than an effective substitute for caustic soda cleaners. Because of its unique formulation of buffers and mild alkalis, it is safe on skin as well as soft metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, and on plastics. P.B.W. uses active oxygen to penetrate carbon or protein soils and is not effected by hard water. The oxygen also helps in reducing B.O.D. and C.O.D. in wastewater, which is an added environmental benefit.

Pros: Works incredibly well
Cons: Its expensive! But you can get an identical product at the dollar store...
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I LOVE PBW! Honestly, I didn't even use sanatizer for the first few times I brewed, I just used PBW and I never had a contaminated batch. I realized that this wasn't a good idea, however, and I started using star-san as well. DONT BUY PBW AT BREW STORES! You can get an identical product at the dollar store. Just make sure to look for bleach-free oxygen based cleanser (you really, really need to make sure its bleach-free).

Pros: Amazing product to clean krausen and trub out of carboys after fermentation.
Cons: Powder does not readily dissolve as would a liquid
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Works fine. Some folks say this is just oxyclean. I used both but think PBW works better for the beer-funk.

Pros: Works great for sanitizing equipment. Dissolves deposits that are left over that were missed during cleaning. Plus its biodegradable.
Cons: Doesn't come with a scoop.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This product is awesome. It works like a charm for sanitizing equipment. I always make sure I have plenty of PBW on hand because you don't want to be caught with out any when brewing.

Pros: One of the best no rinse products I have used. It is one of the few truly tasteless cleaners.
Cons: Only comes in 8oz. or 5lb. containers. It would be nice if they made a 1lb. size.

Pros: Comes in handy, easily storeable 8oz bag. Easy to mix up 1 gallon jug with warm water. This stuff will clean anything off your brewing equipment! You can even use it to soak labels off bottles you want to use for your home brew.
Cons: A resealable bag would be nice.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I love how easy it is to use this stuff. It's also said to be no rinse, which I've found to be true. It's good at soaking labels off newly emptied bottles I've collected. Just make enough to cover a batch of bottles in a large container (5G bucket,or storage container) filling the inside of the bottles too. Give'em 2 days or so to soak,& labels slide right off! Then go to work with a bottle brush,& a dobie to get them clean inside & out. Then just put'em on a bottle tree to dry. They're now ready to store. It also makes cleaning your dirty fermenter way easier as well. soakes loose krausen, etc in a short time. This stuff is just flat out great for all your brew cleaning needs!

Price: $8.00
Pros: Cleans everything in 30-45 minutes of soak, no scrubbing required.
Cons: Leaves a slight residue if not rinsed throughly.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This takes a little bit of time, but the cleaning power is unmatched without harsh chemicals. The cleaner lifts any left over residue from your carboys with ease. Great cleaner with little to no work. Great for better bottles and in instances you don't want to scratch (from scrubbing) the bottles.

Pros: very effective can be re-used multiple times professional grade (developed for use in the Coors plant)
Cons: a little on the expensive side (the ability to re-use more than makes up for it)
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I use this stuff and starsan exclusively now. There's a link to a great interview by the inventor of pbw and starsan on this website here: http://www.simplehomebrewing.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17

Price: $10.00
Pros: You know its brewery safe
Cons: expensive
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This cleaner is very good at what it does. I do love it and it cleans well, but I also think oxyclean works just as good and is way cheaper. I think I will continue to use this stuff just because I know it has proven itself with many brewerys, and I dont want to take any chances leaving chemical residues on my beer contact serfaces.
