I had one of these literally explode in my mash. The glass surrounding the thermometer is extremely thin, which shattered along with the actual thermometer inside. Apparently others have had the same problem. These things are absolute junk.

Pros: hasnt broken yet!
Cons: I have to hold it when putting it in 2.5 gallons of water in my large brew kettle.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I think I will get an electronic thermometer if this one breaks soon

Pros: it floats has easy to read markings
Cons: slow to react very slow
Recommended? No

Comments: well I will start with something positive - it's eventually acurate and easy to read. Now this is why I will never use it - it takes about 10 minutes to stabilize and even then it has me second guessing if it's done usually I have t double check with my digital if I do use it. It can really screw up your mash if you trust it. Here's a real life example I was shooting for a 154f mash temp for a stout and the thermo read 147 after about 10 minutes of mixing the mash well and letting it integrate well i let the thermo float for probably 5 minutes after that. So I added the app. water to hit my mash temp and after 5 minutes it read 154 so I thought I was good but I double checked with my digital a few minutes later and my mash ws at 160f so I check the floater and it's climbed to 158f and like 3 minutes later 160f. Point being it's very slow to react and I wouldn't trust it for on the fly readings or anything that you needed fast accuracy on.

Price: $8.99
Pros: Accurate, the floating portion withstands great heat, very durable.
Cons: They're glass, so if dropped it WILL break, as opposed to a metal thermo.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This is a very good alternative to an expensive digital thermometer, they give good readings and I know personally that the floating portion on the top can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees F. I would recommend this thermometer to anyone who doesn't want to spend so much on a digi!
