The Shirron wort plate chiller is a highly-efficient, compact plate-type wort chiller similar in design to the Therminator. This chiller is made of 10 plates of 316 stainless steel that have been brazed together with pure copper in an oxygen-free furnace. The Shirron Chiller has a bit less surface area than the Therminator, but in our testing it was still very effective at rapidly reducing wort to pitching temperatures.

This chiller has 1/2" NPT threaded male hookups for the wort, and standard 3/4" Garden Hose threads hookups for the chilling and waste water. Wort may be pumped or gravity fed through the chiller.

Pros: Cool's amazingly quick. From boiling to pitching as fast as my pump will push the wort through
Cons: Always concerned about sanitation because I can't see inside. No problems with infection to date though.

Comments: Cool's amazingly quick. From boiling to pitching as fast as my pump will push the wort thru. Always concerned about sanitation because I can't see inside. No problems with infection to date though. I run boiling water thru after brewing followed by some starsan and let it set with starsan until next brew.

Price: $89.00
Pros: small and works great
Cons: have to run the wort slow flow rate to get to 70F temps using Michigan tap water.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I bought this since my IC didn't sit flat in my BK due to dip tube. Also don't have to worry about water dripping into my BK. I have used this product for about 5 brews and I also use a hop bag and bazooka screen in my BK. I still reverse flush this and back at 350 after each use. I have had no issues with clogging but wish I could run higher flow rate to get wort to pitching temps.

Pros: Chills wort to just under 70F in no time, pretty easy clean up
Cons: Went with the smallest one available, probably could have gone bigger
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I am very pleased with this product! It chilled my boiling wort down to just under 70F in no time, even with the valve opened the whole way. From reviews, I almost expected it to need to flow slower to chill correctly but from my moderate-temperature tap water it works wonderfully.

Pros: Works great, run slow or fast or on ice to get perfect temp. Run in reverse to clean.
Cons: careful on the threading. It will cut you deep.

Comments: Great addition to my AG setup. Makes cooling and transfer to the carboy easy.

Price: $89.00
Pros: Fast, easy to use. Easy to clean and sanitize
Cons: Needed to buy a hose to hose adaptor for it since all connections are male.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Chilled 10 gallons of boiling wort to 68º in about 8 min on a gravity feed through 1/2" hose with the spigot wide open. Simply the best thing I have bought for my home brewing. Chilling the wort used to be a chore now it is Oh so easy.. Boil it and all hoses prior to chilling the wort for sanitation, I use 1/2" ID silicone hose so the wort really flows fast.. I also have 51º well water all year round. Absolutely awesome.. I want to brew more just because I have it..

Comments: This was the most affordable counterflow chiller I've seen and it does the trick. It takes me about 20 minutes to syphon 5 gallons of wort through it, and I use only a trickle of tap water to come out with 60F (wintertime). A pump should speed up the process a great deal. It's easy to clean, since you can just soak the whole thing in cleanser, boil it, bake it, whatever. It can be tricky to get every last drop of water out after cleaning it, and you need to strain the wort before you run it through the block since hop bits can clog it.

Pros: Small, but powerful. easy to store, easy to clean.
Cons: Take care of the sharp edges before you cut yourself.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Mine is easy to clean. Does what it says. I run ice water through mine and throttle the Sump pump to stay at pitching temperature otherwise I would have to warm up my wort to pitch. Good product at a good price.

Shirron Shirron Wort Chiller
Pros: Compact efficient design, good price
Cons: Could cool a bit more, cleaning
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I started using it halfway though this past summer and fell in love. Previously the immersion chiller added almost an hour to my brew day. MYe water supply isn;t too cool so I startde using the old immersion chiller as a pre-chiller and got the runoff to about 77 deg. (pretty low since is was above 100 ourtside).

Shirron Shirron Wort Chiller
Pros: Very efficient compared to my previous immersion model
Cons: Post-use cleaning slightly difficult.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Bought one from my LHS and love it. I took DigDan's advice and made a backflush connector for less than $3.00 with parts from Lowes. I use my old immersion chiller as a pre-chiller and this thing is so efficient I couldn't believe it; even on a 102 F day here in Texas I actually chilled my wort below optimal pitching temperature as a result of the pre-chilling setup. Immediately after use I backflush for a couple of minutes and then place the entire thing in the oven at 250F for 15 minutes for drying pruposes. After 3 times use I have noticed a definite reduction of chill haze that I believe is directly correlated to the Shirron. Highly recommend it; however, I wish it had bolts on the back so that I could mount it with wing nuts for easy installation and removal on brew day. Just my $0.02
