Default WSJ article on skyrocketing cost of beer.

Well, a on good beer anyway.

Not that there haven't been other articles recently, but this is the first one I've seen with actual pricing changes (.50-1.00 a six pack).

... also check the little graph showing the spike in malted barley pricing, that is one big spike in August september (ouch).

Wow, interesting article. The only consolation is that with rising prices, more farmers will be inclined to plant hops and barley and stabalize the market.

I wonder if we are reaching market saturation for craft breweries.

I don't know if you all noticed, but the price of everything is rising rapidly. I suspect that homebrew ingredients won't rise as fast as finished beer prices (ignoring things like crop failures), simply because of the massive amounts of energy required to run a brewery. That's not to say we won't have to pay a higher cost per gal of beer in enegy at home...

The price of everything isn't rising as much as the dollar is going to $#!t.

A barrel of craft brew Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, for example, has about twice the malt and as many as five times the hops of a mass-market brew, like Budweiser or Miller High Life.
Ain't that the truth!

Demand from Asia (particularly China) is also jacking up prices.
