Brewing Classic Styles by Jamil Zainasheff & John Palmer.

To my knowledge the database IS open to everyone.

I don't know why the OP doesn't think the recipe database of the largest most active homebrewing forum, home to many award winning brewers, and where many members have appeared on podcasts and in the pages of zymurgy and BYO, wouldn't be good enough for a new brewer starting out to find great recipes.

Over the last year or so the database (not the recipe ingredient forum) the database has been self policed and vetted a bit to only represent recipes actually brewed and not the place where people post experiements.

One thing to do is to be selective in the recipes you brew on here...if you are around long enough, and read people's posts you get an idea of who has experience in creating recipes and who doesn't...Which recipes get brewed alot, etc....and trust the recipes by them...

When I'm looking for a recipe I start with those by people I know on here, like the Mods or some of the other brewers who help beginners because I know their brewing philosophy or level of experience, or have seen the response to their recipes..After those people I will look at the other recipes and see if the poster has updated or posted comments about their recipe, or if other people have as well..to see if anyone else has brewed it...then the next "tier" is those that look like the recipe was written AFTER it was brewed and bottled.

(once clue look to see if they put a final gravity in the recipe..if there is a question mark, or a blank, than more than likely it was put in there before being tested.)

It seems like it's getting better, the mods are police it more, as are other members, and the mods want people to report any of the recipe that look untried, and they will either notify the OP to update the recipe with tasting notes, gravites, etc, or move them back to the recipe ingredients section...so there's hope that the database can actually be the "canon" of everyone's best recipes...

If you look at my pull down..you see only two recipe in there (and in the database) yet I have posted a lot of my recipes in the Recipe/ingredients forum..at least a half dozen, maybe more...

But I feel that my brown ale, and my vuienna lager which has one an honorable mention in a large competition, are the only ones I "stand behind" right now enough to attach my name to it.

That's another thing, those who have won an award of some type usually mention show in the recipe.

So I don't know why you want to so quickly disregard a database that most of us are proud of.

Coming back to what you said about extract/partials, almost ALL of the popular recipes on here, especially the All Grains, have discussions on how to convert to extract and if they don't, we're a helpful group of people when it comes to converting.

I had a buddy who wanted to get into homebrewing, he bought the equipment kit and I threw together a variation of Biermuncher's Centennial Blonde without using BM's extract recipe, because I can.

When I was a newbie I spent plenty of time in the recipe section, requesting extract versions of recipes and everything. The more I learned, the easier it was. Some special grains HAVE to be mashed, and I've learned you can do that with DeathBrewer's stove top all grain method (its what I did for my buddy, mentioned above, I got to explain to him how his first brew was a partial mash and introduce him to the different methods)

Give our database a shot!

I actually paid up yesterday, and spent a lot of time checking out the new stuff. Part of the new stuff was the database. Before I could get to them if they were in the "profile" part of a post, but not on the main menu. BtW the motivational posters and quotes are hilarious.

If you click on the "recipes" drop down under our names you will see links to our recipes, they will take you directly to our recipes. If there is someone who you respect or seems to know what they are doing, like the mods, especially biermuncher, yooper, orfy, brad and I think Yuri (not sure if I ever checked OlllO's pulldown) you will see their recipes, and it will take you t the recpes database.

If you want some decent "alternative recipes" then go and check these out:

http://www.brew365.com/recipes.php

http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/recipe-kits/all-grain-kits
look at each recipe then click on the recipe inventory sheet to find out what each kit contains.

If this can't help you then continue looking by Google, or Dogpile seach engine.

Cheers! and Prost!
