Define rarest? Beer that is strongly desired and hard to get, or beer nobody has ever heard of?

If you're talking about beer people clamor for, I would go Westy 12. You can only buy it at the monastery, or through less legal channels. It is rated as one of the top beers in the world, but near impossible to get.

As for the USA, I would just pick a one off from any of the great breweries. Something like Isabelle Proximus (5 guys, one barrel), or maybe something like the Toronado 20th Anniversary from Russian River or 2004 Barrel Aged Speedway Stout (only 255 bottles made...)

It all depends on what you consider rare. There's a ton of small breweries doing great one off batches that most people won't ever try.

I don't think this is off topic, just tangential. Tonight, I made a quick dinner with some chicken and a pretty good Californian Marsala. I had to rush to get it finished before work. At work, I was greeted with a sample of Sam Adam's Utopia (allegedly the strongest beer in the world, and, therefore, somewhat "rare." IMO, the Utopia tasted almost exactly like the Marsala, only with more maple sugar.

Yeah, it was potent, but its left my co-workers and I confused. All I taste is sugar and wasted money.

There is usually some on Ebay and you can get it at a few restaurants or bars (I know of one in SF and one in Quebec City) if you happen to live in the right place.

You should be aware that it is rarer than other trappist beers, not necessarily better. I personally prefer Rochefort, some prefer Westvleteren. Any Westvleteren you get in the US is probably in worse condition than he Rochefort you could buy.

Westvleteren has a STRONG banana flavor (they ferment with Westmalle yeast very hot). If that isn't your thing, don't go wasting $20 on a bottle.
