I was under the impression that doubles were maltier than a tripel. Doubles also tend to be slightly darker. ABV's can be similar, but are typically slightly higher in a tripel too.

It's mostly SRM range is light for Tripels (3.5-5.5 SRM), ABV tends to be about 1-3% higher, Tripels will use only light Belgian Candi Sugar or syrup, once again watch the SRM's to keep in the light yellow to copper color range, while the Dubbels (any Dubbel) will be darker Amber-Copper to Copper-Brown Color (10-14 SRM). Tripels can be fruity to earthy to slight malty finish, but clean and crisp; while Dubbels will vary in maltiness, complexity, darker color, somewhat dry, but more balanced and not crisp as a Tripel. Due to it's complexities Dubbels and Quads take longer to balance out, or age properly. While Tripels will age about the same time to much sooner since they are less complex. Dubbels will tend to use Amber or Darker Candi Syrup or Sugar since you are trying to hit a higher SRM or Lovibond. Also look at Hop profiles, Tripels will have a slightly higher hop profile, but still close and overlapping can occur. Also ferment temps tend to be slight higher for Tripels (3-5*higher, depending on Yeast Strain), while Dubbels get some great esters at higher temps, but only to finish and like the high 60's to low70's for fermenting (once again varying depending on Yeast Strain).

No, this is not a zombie thread. It has been resurrected not once, but three times.

This is a lich thread. It is immortal and will keep coming back to life, unless we can find and destroy its phylactery!
