Just wanted to share this article with you all. I know we have some Brazilians on here and some Gringoes in Brazil. This is in today's paper. One of the most read in São Paulo (my home away from home). I have been to the Cervejaria Nacional mentioned in this article and the Braumeister produces world class beers. Worth the trip to try one for anyone in São Paulo.

Home Brewing becomes all the Rage in São Paulo

LUIZA FECAROTTA – São Paulo

The New York son of Neapolitans, Al Capone became one of the most famous gangsters in Chicago. Ironically, it was not a conviction of homicide that sent him to prison.

During the first half of the 20th Century, while prohibition was still law, Al Capone became involved in the distribution of alcohol. Convicted of tax evasion Al Capone was sent to prison.

It wasn’t only the mafia that skirted around the law that prohibited the consumption of alcohol. Common people would ferment turbid drinks in their basement adding ingredients that covered up the taste of moonshine distilling and produced beer.

It was only recently that this practice gained popularity (almost a rage), here in Brazil, as can be seen in the growth of the Craft Beer Industry.
With access to quality ingredients and with the necessary equipment to set up a mini-brewery, more people have taken to the hobby.

The specialist Eduardo Passareli, for example, relates that he receives home brewers weekly in his bar, The Melograno (tel. 0/xx/11/3031-2921), interested in showing their brews.

For the Brew Master and Sommelier, Cilene Saorin, there has a constant increase in people interested in adopting this practice. “This is, really, a gastronomical movement. Who ventures into the kitchen and sets out to make beer puts their creativity to work.” indicates Saorin.

FROM HOBBY TO BUSINESS

Created from a spontaneous process of nature, which cereal grains that come in contact with water germinate and then ferment by microscopic fungus (yeast), found in the ambient area, beer is one of the most ancient alcoholic beverages.

With evidence of at least 6000 years, when man cultivated cereal grains and stocked them, beer, today is the alcoholic beverage most consumed today.
It was in the monasteries during the Middle Ages where brewing took hold. Seen as liquid bread – “A vital necessity.”, according the “O Livro da Cerveja” (The Book of Beer). “Provided quick calories and since it was boiled, it was safer than water.”

The practice has evolved into the birth of a business. Becoming the object of study for people like Jaime Pereira Filho who, fairly recently born, in 1951, was already tied to the universe of fermented beverages: a wooden beer crate, with linens and stuffed pillows served as his cradle.

In the courtyard of the bar Pier 1327 (0/xx/11/5539-6213; picture in side bar)(picture not imported from translated page), referred to as his “beer garden”, today he teaches how to make home brew.

Alexandre Sigolo and Rodrigo Louro, of Sinnatrah, post graduates in biochemistry, have take up the hobby of home brewing, where they have stocked up their little kitchen with all the fabricated equipment, tools of the trade.

Today, they sustain themselves in a space on Pompeia, where they produce different categories of beverages and administer course for enthusiasts.

In fact this February, they have promised to open a microbrewery, whose idea was born through pleasure, conjugated at a bar, a Cervejaria Nacional. The location most likely will be located in Pinheiros, and serving their own beverages.
