Default Smoky??

I had one of my homebrews last night, and it wasnt' real bad, but it wasn't as good as I remember it a few weeks ago. I had tried for an IPA, but the recipe ended up more like an APA after all was done and said. At any rate, it was pretty darn good a while back, but last night it almost tasted like the air in a bar! Is this what they mean by smoky??

It could also be that I was following up on a Belgian Wit I made not long ago, which I REALLY like, and it was the sudden change in styles that caused this cig flavor? I did drink the whole thing, and it wasn't bad, but not as good as I remember.
