Default Question about using a lot of whole hops

Every time I make IPA I use pellet hops, but of course for the amount an IPA needs, it creates a lot of sludge. Would it be a waste to use 6 plus oz. of whole hops? I assume they would soak up a lot of wort in the boil. This would be for a 5 gal. batch.

I prefer to use whole hops when i can. It definately reduces the sludge but unfortunately they're not quite as potent. You need use about 10% more.

just use some hop bags. Works great. I usually always use them for the initial bittering addition after that I just chuck the flavor and aroma hops in the boil. Helps to reduce sludge.

use em. That's all we use for the most part here in the northwest. it wont hurt anything. they do absorb some wort but if you use a bag and let them drip out while cooling your fine. I use 4-6 oz all the time for 5 gal batches

If you have a small brewpot, using all whole leaf hops can be a PITA with an IPA.

use a bag and let it drain, you'll be fine.
