Default orange juice as fermentable?

obviously apple juice is commonly used as a base fermentable in cider. Cherries and raspberries and other fruits appear in various recipes.

But I don't recall seeing orange juice or other citrus as the primary fermentable. It seems like it would be chock full of simple sugars - would it be possible to make an orange-cider type of concoction, or maybe graff with 20% of so of barley wort?

I had orange wine once, it was really dry and not very good.

It's also extremely acidic which would create a tough environment for the yeast. If you do want to try it out, check out the hard lemonade thread. You'll probably have to use a wine yeast.

I'm not sure that I'd think fermented orange juice would be all that tasty but after backsweetening it might be good.

As someone who has a lot of experience with baby vomit over the last year or two, I can say that fermented OJ would be vile.

As long as we're not talking about hooch (*nervous cough*), I'd think the acidity in OJ would be too much for the average yeast strain to handle...could be wrong.

oh, I hadn't thought about the acidity killing yeast - good point!
