Depends on the laws in your state. In NJ the requirements are just commercial property on which to brew AFAIK. Give your township a call and ask.

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but I did notice that it was alluded to several times that this is NOT a money-making proposition. If he's just doing it to learn to be a successful commercial brewer, that's one thing. But working to sell stuff to other people and not making money just doesn't add up for me.

This has been extremely helpful for me as I'm embarking on a similar endeavor. All I ever hear is "You better start out with a 7bbl capacity, or else you're going to fail." Joel may be the exception rather than the rule, but it's nice to know what is possible - even if you start from something as small as a .75bbl brewery.

I've been champing at the bit to get my business started, so his advice to chill and make sure you've got EVERYTHING tight definitely hits home. I would say that his situation might be a little different than others simply because of the allowance of self-distribution in Washington...that and the craft brewing/brewery market on the west coast is fairly healthy & vibrant - especially in Seattle.

It might be different when you have to make the decision to either go through a distributor or open an alehouse (or both).
