Mimimum time for dry hopping
|
|
I've got 10 gallons of a rye pale ale, 5 gallons fermented with sf-05 and 5 with nottingham.
Put 1 ounce of hops in each bucket, been in 3 days. At what point will the majority of the hops aroma be absorbed? I've heard a week is the general rule of thumb, but I really wanna keg this stuff.....

Dry hopping the keg has deg been done. I don't own a keg though so I can't coach you there.
I am currently dry hopping a double IPA and was wondering how long is too long myself.

Any reason why I can't throw the hops (that are in a bag) in the keg when I rack the beer in?

nope, but you might be better off using fresh hops. after several days the hops will be spent and won't do much to your cold beer.

I frequently dryhop for 3-5 days, sometimes up to 7 days.

4 days won't get much aroma. 7 days is min for good aroma,10 days is good if you want it fairly strong. I do 7 days with my IPA with .5oz of 3 different hops. As soon as I crack it open, you immedietly get hit in the nose with a big hop aroma.

When I dryhop, I usually go for at least 7 days and as long as 14. If you are going to dryhop in the keg, use a hog bag and let your keg sit the at room temp for an additional 3 or 4 day.

My theory is that most of the oil extraction happens at the beginning with diminishing returns as time goes on. I once dryhopped a keg with 2 oz. of citra and it was amazingly hoppy within 4 hours. I now dryhop for 3-5 days. I feel it is a good balance of oil extraction without leeching out some of the more green plant like aromas you can sometimes get with dry hops.
