OK, so a friend just found out his wife is preggers. After talking about it for a while, I suggested that it might be cool if we brewed a barleywine in celebration of the pregnancy, that would first be drank to celebrate the child's birth (~9 months, duh). And then another bottle or so would be opened each year of the child's birth, with the final bottles being shared with said child on their 21st birthday.

Good idea? Is 21.75 years too long for a barleywine?

Brew it big, 12% or higher, and it'll be just fine for that long. Oh, and use some oxy caps.

Really really cool idea...assuming it works. There are two issues I'm curious about:
1) Will it last 21 years in bottles without going bad?
2) Can you go 21 years without drinking it all? ;)

+1 on the oxy absorbing caps. Also, a big thing here will be to make sure the beer is stored at proper cellaring temps. Very cool idea, btw.
