Default Grain bag for all grain brewing?

Can a person successfully make an all grain beer using only a grain bag, or must you make and use lautering equipment?

I use a 5 gallon paint strainer bag in a 7.5 gallon pot using the BIAB technique linked to by maxam there. It has its disadvantages, but it also has some really strong advantages, the biggest one being cost.
