Default Ginger Beer.....?

On another forum (non brewing) I am a member of, someone brought up the topic of Ginger Beer. He said he made it and it tasted awful. Since there happen to be a few brewers on the forum, I asked for his recipe thinking it was an actual ginger beer. This is what he gave me...

To be honest that looks quite disgusting... and more like a way to make simple hooch than a good tasting beverage.

The yeast is just to carbonate, it doesn't ferment out the sugar (unless something goes wrong).

I have made ginger beer many times, but keg it instead of adding yeast. That way it lasts longer and I don't have to worry about exploding bottles.

That isn't a bad recipe, but I'd call it ginger soda-water with lots of sugar. Why certain sodas are referred to as "beer" escapes me.
