Default Flemish Red became a Flemish Brown!?!?

I made a flemish red ale but did not use bacteria to produce the sour characteristic so I added 1 tbsp of lactic acid to the carboy. The beer went from CRYSTAL clear red to dark brown. Tastes great but I'd like to know what happened for future reference.
