does anyone have a recommendation for a good digital brewing thermometer? Preferably $20 or less

I use these, Digital Thermometer. They are waterproof, you can recalibrate them, and they are tough little thermometers. Might be able to find them cheaper somewhere else.

I found a waterproof digital thermometer at Target by Taylor that measures from 40-450, has instant read, and was only $19.99. The sleeve is treated with an anti-microbial agent, though you'll still want to sanitize the probe, of course.

You can get it on their website:

The one Iechyd was referring to on Amazon (I always like to check there first):

I just picked this up about a week ago at Meijer for about $18. I used it last weekend and it is great. The ability to calibrate is nice (although I didn't have to - read 32.1 in crushed ice water right out of the box). I only wish the probe was a little longer, but none of the digital thermometers I looked at had one any longer.

Thanks, I was wondering if Meijer had it. Now I know!

I like using these. They are for cooking roasts in the oven. You would have to 'wort-proof' the probe though...Bobby_M thought of a clever (yet slightly difficult) way to do that and there is a big thread about it. I actually only use the inner o-ring and it's sealed fine for several brews. It's also nice because it has magnets on the back so I can put the probe in my keezer or lager fridge and then just stick the display on the side of the fridge. That's actually where both of mine stay (or monitoring an ale fermentation chamber...aka bathtub ) until brewday. It also works great to monitor beer fermentation temps.

I like this thermometer by Fischer Scientific:

Amazon.com: Fisher Scientific Digital Thermometers; SS Stem; Type: Lollipop: Industrial & Scientific

I think you can find it cheaper on ebay or somewhere else.

Do yourself a favor and buy a real digital thermometer, not a toy one:

This is a little over your budget, but at $38.00 it's still reasonable. I got weary of the kitchen thermometers croaking or going crazy after only a couple of sessions.
