Default Can yeast and/or fermcap-s affect hyrdometer reading?

I brewed up some pale ale last night and my pre-boil grav was 1.039. I pitched the 70 degree wort on top of a nottingham yeast cake and then dropped the ferm cap in. I put the hydrometer right where i dropped the fermcap and it was only giving me a reading of 1.042 which is way low for this beer.

Could the yeast and fermcap has affected the reading?

Hey, off subject but how do you estimate the preboil gravity?

I take the hydrometer reading and take the temperature and use the gravity adjustment tool in beersmith.
