PROGRAM DETAILS

On any list of the movers and shakers of the craft beer industry, near the top would be Jim Koch, Brewer and Founder of Boston Beer Co.; Paul Shipman, president and CEO of Redhook Ales; and Charles Finkel, founder of specialty importer Merchant du Vin and currently owner of Seattle’s Pike Brewing Company. Join these three pioneers of craft brewing and enjoy some of their libations not readily found in the Washington area in this convivial afternoon at the R.F.D.Washington brewpub.

Koch, who brewed the first test batch of Sam Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen, talks about how he turned that experiment into a business approaching the 2-million-barrel-a-year mark. Shipman relates the impact of partnering with Anheuser- Busch, the nation’s largest brewer. Finkel discusses how European imports piqued America’s taste for better beer and helped spark the revolution in beer diversity. What beer styles will Americans be drinking in the future? How will rising malt and hops prices affect specialty brewers? Will beer challenge wine as the preferred drink to accompany elegant dinners? The experts will explore these questions and more as they take you “behind the barley” and discuss the process of creating some of their best beers, their challenges, and their triumphs.

The program is coordinated by Jim Dorsch, editor and publisher, American Brewer magazine, and Greg Kitsock, editor, Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, and associate editor, American Brewer magazine.
