My friend got a Mr. Beer kit for Channukah this past December, and he just called me a little bit ago from a supply store asking what kind of equipment he would need to start doing extract batches. That made me smile.
I told him that any start up kit they had would probably be good, but that he should price compare with some of the online stores. Since some of them have flat rate shipping, he could prob get a start up supply kit and a brew kit for a good price. But if anyone knows a good LHBS in Astoria, NY (Queens), let me know and I'll pass it on. Hooray beer!

Next thing you know, he will be making his own mashing tun. I just built mine this weekend and can't stop staring at it. My SWMBO things i'm having an affair with it.

East Coast Hydroponics And Homebrew Too - Reviews - BeerAdvocate

This is a pretty ****ty home brew shop off the LIE. However it does have everything you need to start out without blowing $6.99 on shipping.
