Price: $29.99
Pros: Glass is easy to clean and sanitize. Very durable (unless you break it).
Cons: Glass is easy to break - and heavy. Can be tough to get sticky labels, brewmometers, etc. to stay stuck on
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Single-item price listed from Midwest, but I purchased it as part of a Brewer's Best homebrewing starter kit. I had found the best price through eBay on a posting from Midwest ($85 + $25 shipping to NH). Standard good quality equipment.

Price: $20.00
Pros: perfect for apfelwine
Cons: sucks to clean
Recommended? No

Comments: since i've gotten away from secondary, i only use this for apfelwine at the moment. It is a PITA to move, slippery when wet, and clunky.

Price: $0.01
Pros: glass, it wont leach flavor into beer
Cons: heavy and breakable
Recommended? Yes

Comments: i got a few 5 gal carboys from my grandmother and i cleaned them up as they have been outside for 30+ years. they seem like they will do nicely and i do not think they will ever go bad unless i break them. IMO they are better than buying a beginner kit, but i dont really know because i havent done anything with them yet!

Price: $30.00
Pros: Feels nice and solid, thick glass, large smooth spot that fits Fermometer without going over any ridges/bumps.
Cons: None that I know of.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Bought this at the Red Salamander in Grand Ledge, MI. Fair price, and he threw in the bung and airlock for free.

Price: $30.00
Pros: -no infections -transparent
Cons: -don't chip it -use a blow off tube
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I have a two of these and while they are great for secondary fermentations I try not to use them for primaries since they will volcano yeast. Still, the yeast will sometimes stack up 1' in the air so it makes for a great photo.

Price: $25.00
Pros: Allows you to see if your product has clarified without exposing to air, lets you monitor trub levels, doesn't leech flavors as readily as plastics, can be made into nifty fish tanks
Cons: Heavy-ish, breakable, definitely gets slippery when sanitizing solution gets on the outside
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Chicks dig the glass carboy. Showing off a plastic bucket is not nearly as mind blowing as being able to show the actual fermentation taking place, the trub settling out, the yeast flocs forming, the krausen on the top. It allows you to monitor your beer's progress more closely without exposing it to air, though obviously you've got to be careful about light exposure.

Price: $15.00
Pros: Looks cool, low oxygen permeation, good heat transfer
Cons: Fragile, heavy, moderately difficult to clean
Recommended? Yes

Comments: My carboys are old water cooler bottles I purchased on craigslist for $15 a pop. They're elegant and fairly easy to work with for smaller batches. I think the glass carboy presents an image of class when showing pictures or sharing about my brewing, which I believe is an important part of removing the stigmas surrounding homebrew. Hobby beekeepers take the same care in bottling honey in nice, clean glass jars and not old mayo jars or plastic containers. It helps keep the overall image of the hobby clean and acceptable, thereby making the hobby more attractive to newcomers. Otherwise, I would suggest saving up for a SS fermenter with temp control.

Price: $38.00
Pros: Great to watch the color clear out and see the sediment at the bottom before transferring to bottling bucket
Cons: Heavy when full with beer
Recommended? Yes

Comments: This is a great product when empty. When full it gets to be a bit heavy and would need to straps to move easier when putting back into place of storage. Nice to see how the beer clarifies and see the sediment at bottom and know you are making a great beer.
