Default Why are wheat beers the preferred fruit base?

I'm just curious why it seems that wheat beers are the preferred base beer when making a fruit beer? I'm thinking of making a watermelon beer, leaning towards the wheat, but that's just because of what fruit beers I see the most. I'm sure ale would be good too, I'm just curious.

It's just a base beer that doesn't call attention to itself very much, allowing you to hilight the fruit. But any light-ish pale beer works well.

+1. I also use low IBU blondes as basis for fruit beers too.

I also like a good grainy/bready (low ibu) pale ale with fruit. I have a pale ale in secondary right now which will become blueberry muffin beer!

Wheat beers retain some sweetness that balances out the acids from the fruit. They also tend to be cloudy so any pectin haze from the fruit doesn't detract from the beer.

And wheat beer is awesome.

But blondes, pale ales, brown ales, bitters, milds, porter, stout etc. can also be made with fruit.
