Who slipped the viagra in my carboy?
|
|
A 10 day head? WTH?
I've got a fairly standard IPA that went into the carboy 11 days ago. Used WLP001 from a starter on a stir plate. Fermentation started within 6 or 7 hours. By the next morning it had a 3 inch krausen on it. Ten days later it still has a 3 inch krausen on it.
I'm not going to waste time worrying about it. It's just a batch of beer. But isn't that sort of a long time? I've never had head last more than 4 or 5 days before. Is it just lazy or something?

If you used pellet hops, I know they like to hang out at the top. I had an IPA that had hops gunk floating at the top for a good three weeks. It was still there come bottling time, so I just used a hop sock on my autosiphon to avoid it.

Well, you know there were five ounces of pellets in this batch. Normally I use muslin bags for pellets, but there were so many individual additions in this one I just tossed them in. I wonder if the pellets floating on the surface are keeping the krausen from falling as quickly as it normally would?
I think I'll contemplate this possibility over a beer or four.

Could be. I don't know much about surface tension and the science behind that, but it seems reasonable. Either way, if my past experience is any indicator, it might not ever fully drop down. As long as the SG is in the green and you've given the yeast time to clean up, blah blah blah, it should be fine to bottle.
Just my 2/-. I think I'll also ponder this over a beer or four.

Fortunately this one will be dry hopped, so in another week or so I'll just move it to a secondary. I'm sure it'll be fine. Or not. Who knows?
