Default Whiskey in my airlock

I'm gonna start cold crashing an IPA in my fridge tomorrow and don't have any vodka on hand. Would rye whiskey be ok? If I do get suckback, that small of an amount wouldnt affect the flavor of the beer would it?

you won't get that much suck back, if any.

Agreed. Starsan is also always an option.

whiskey, vodka, rye, sourmash, gin, vermouth... no more than 1/2 oz should go back in, so no difference. you're just looking for somethng 20+% abv

Just keep a bunch of 'S' shaped airlocks on hand, and you won't have to worry about this kind of thing. Three piece airlocks suck (immho).

I ran out of vodka once when making my whiskely ale,& used a little Beam's Black. Worked out fine. But being as how it had bourbon soaked oak chips in it....

i used soco in a pinch once since i was out of vodka.. and it was nice since the darker color in the airlock let me easily tell which dark fermenting beer was which

Again... Fill the 3-piece airlock properly and there won't be any suckback:

Back to basics - filling a 3-piece airlock
