I suggest getting a copy of your municipal water report and using Palmer's water nomograph. That's a great way to get going. The nomograph and details of how to read a water report are in Chapter 15 - Understanding the Mash pH in his book "How to Brew" (online: http://www.howtobrew.com/section3/chapter15.html).

It's not light stuff, but if you had hard/alkaline water, or really soft water, you may improve your AG brews by following his guidelines.

Well, first you need to know what kind of water you have. Most municipal water reports are pretty vague. Best to pay for an analysis from a lab. Here's one some of the folks on this board have used:http://www.wardlab.com/. ask for a household water analysis. Once you get your results you can plug your numbers in and then make the needed adjustments for style by buying some basic salts from any Homebrew supply shop
