Sinking hydrometer
|
|
So, I just brewed a partial mash batch of English Pale Ale and the OG was 1.030. when I went to keg it, I checked the gravity again and the hydrometer sank to just below the level of the brew. I've never seen that happen.....has anybody here? Not really sure what this means, so I thought I'd let it sit for a while before tasting it to see what happens and in the meantime start asking around. I appreciate any advice!

You mean that your hydrometer was completely under the surface of the beer? In a test jar?
What does plain water read with your hydrometer?

Don't they make hydros meant for higher ranges and call them OG hydrometers. What's the lowest gravity in the scale?

It could mean that the final gravity was bellow the limit for the hydrometer(mines about 0.99 i thinks). The depth change is still linear for reading the scale. Pure ethanol is 0.789 a reading less then this would be suspicious.
Or it could be a crack in the glass letting water in.
Did it just go a little below, or sink alot?
