To get your lower FG, help the yeast to finish the job. You need to control the temperature (I'd prefer the low to mid 60's but up to 70 shouldn't hurt too much) for the initial period as the yeast gobble up the easy sugars. By about the 4th day that should have pretty much subsided and you can encourge the yeast by bringing the temperature up into the 70's as by this time the flavor is set and warmth just helps the yeast along as they try to chew up the last of the sugars.

Not that your hitting this issue, but I had a few batches stall around 1.020 when I fermented at too low if a temperature (e.g. 58-59 using s-05). The fix was to buy a $21 digital temp controller and rig it to a 60 watt light bulb in a paint can.

How about yeast nutrient? Seems to help my beers finish out better. Also after 4-5 days I like to rock my fermentor and warm it up to about 70, which gets the yeast back into suspension and gets em back to work. That should knock a few points off.

Yes to nutrients.
As for rocking the fermentor, I would avoid it unless you can purge it with CO2 first - you don't want to late-aerate your beer!

You should have no problem getting to lower FG. You say you are familiar with the effects if adding simple sugars but have you tried it?!
If you add cane sugar you will drop the FG. I would suggest 1/4 for a light ale, 1/2 for an IPA, and 3/4-1 lb for an imperial. You really don't need to change anything else. Try it!

Not yet; this is all theoretical and based on what calculators tell me. This is definitely on my short list of things to try soon, though. But since I can't afford to run lots of experimental batches, I'm trying to get a little ahead of the curve if at all possible.
