Default Morning brew session dilemma: to partake or not to partake?

The boil is going nicely, I hit my gravity and volume dead on, and I'd really like to open the first bottle of my tripel while I brew.

But it's 10:30 am. My wife is coming home for lunch, and she'll definitely think I have issues if she smells beer on my breath (and she *always* smells beer on my breath when I've had a beer within the last 8 hours.)

Thoughts?

Um, wait until after she leaves for work again? I don't know. who am i to say??? Have a beer now and then crack another open and be drinking it when she gets home??? 'Nooooooooo honey, I didn't start drinking until 5 minutes ago!'
(That might be what i do if caught in same situation...)

Too late!

The tripel is going to be great in about a month. It's a little more subdued in flavor that I'd hoped and a little on the dry side (started in the high 70s, finished at 1.009), but very nice.

I'll just brush my teeth about 12 times and hope for the best.

Reminds me of the scene from Spanglish where the grandma is getting ready to drink some wine and the chick is like "mom it's not even 12:00 yet" and the clock strikes 12:00.

All kidding aside, I'd just wait. It just isn't worth it because if it puts a negative air about your hobby of homebrewing that could have far greater consequences than the enjoyment of your brew immediately.

I don't know your wife. My wife wouldn't really give shyt. Hell, she's had beer before noon with me before (it's so cool that my wifey loves my brew!), but you said your wife would "have issues", so...it's really your call.

Do you have anything to do this afternoon? Like I said, I don't know your wife, but, can she really "have issues" if you're drinking but have nowhere to go and nothing important to do for the rest of the day? Personally, I don't think, in the 33 batches I've brewed, I've ever done it without drinking some beer (it's a ritual experience) and some great music. So I'd say throw caution to the wind if I were you.

But if you have things to do later, she might be justified in "having issues". So do what you feel is appropriate. But if I were you, it wouldn't be a question.

I don't see the big deal with have a beer or two while you are brewing. Being piss drunk by noon could be bad..

Heck some mornings I get up and I would really love to have a porter. I normally don't but would it be so bad?

Get a new wife?

Tell her it's after noon somewhere?

Do what you have to do now, and beg for forgiveness later?

Without wanting to try and analyze your life and relationships...

If she doesn't trust you to have a beer in the morning when you brew, seems that there's something else going on, some missing communication or a lack of trust or something. I'm assuming that you aren't one to partake at 10:30 AM on a non-brewing day. I'm not going to try and guess about what issues might be at work, but it seems to me that there's more to this than simply her not wanting you to have a drink......

You're brewing beer at 10:30 on a Thursday. You obviously know where your priorities lie, and having a beer while making beer is essential. I think it should be step 1, 15, and 24 of every good beer recipe.

Besides, you're already married. She got what she wanted, so go for it!
